In general, I'm not a big fan of technology that's driven by extensive menus that force users to navigate through page after page of little used options.
It comes in a nice, metal case and all of the meters, faders and switches look like they are built to last. Many of the other Multi-Track HD machines - even ones that cost much more - are housed in plastic boxes and have the look and feel of toys. It took me a couple of hours to familiarize myself with some of the basic settings required to use this recorder- and there are some strange, "round about ways of setting specific parameters" - but I was able to record a quartet with three condenser mics on the drums, one on the sax and a direct bass and electronic keyboard input while utililizing reverb send and entering some basic track EQ's.
Not too daunting a task on the ZoomHD16CD for this non-technical recordist As a musician, my primary interest was in purchasing a simple multi-track unit to record live performances of jazz combos. This required at least eight balanced microphone inputs with phantom power as an option. The Zoom fits the bill perfectly and has a linked 8 track option that simplifies the process of recording small groups with individual mics on each player or large ensembles with a stereo pair and a few additional "solo" mics.
However, individuals musicians who write and perform their own material might find the ability to create and add a drum track worth the extra effort. All in all, the ZoomHD16CD looks like one of the best options for home studio and portable location recording. It is far superior in construction and materials to the majority of competitive products and is affordable in price.
Check it out! I still can't figure out why some manufacturer can't or won't design an build a reliable "stand-alone" multi-track recorder with mic inputs, tracks, independent phantom power on each mic inputs, simple - but quality- Eq and effects processing on rotary encoders, firewire transfer capability and redundant recording on SD cards?
I'd think the market for a serious self contained machine one that feels very analog and tactile and one that doesn't demand that the user is a trouble shooting software guru would be excellent It took us a while to figure out how this recorder fit into our band's creative process.
The manual isn't very clear but once you get into "zoom speak" and understand what the manual means, the recorder opens into a tool that much more than any of us expected. The quality is great, the interface is pretty easy to navigate, and the effects which we don't use much since they don;t fit with our sound sound pretty amazing.
I give it 5 stars. It's not cheap, but well worth it if you're recording drums or producing a full band. I have not used the device as a DAW controller, but I'm looking forward to exploring that ability soon. If you can afford it and need it, buy it. Thread starter EternusMorbus Start date Apr 27, EternusMorbus New member. My last thread was about my studio and some problems, I got the help I wanted. I've had it for quiet some time now, and I'm sure its a wonderful recorder.
But, I think I'm doing something wrong, because the quality is quiet low, and so are the volume.
